Obesity Watch: High-fructose corn syrup makes you fatter

PRINCETON – Recently – proving what we’ve all assumed for years – researchers at Princeton University demonstrated that high-fructose corn syrup causes significantly more weight gain than standard sugar sources. Good work, science.

In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides. –Science Daily

According to some however, “Fat” is the new  “N” word so we are not allowed to call people that any more – we should probably come up with another term because we wouldn’t want them to feel badly and be motivated to get healthy.

Of course, corpulence by any other name will be just a disgusting.High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Obesity, Corn Syrup Sweetness

As of today, I care if you’re healthy.

    US Healthcare System

    New US Healthcare System

    Dear 67% of Adults,

Prior to the passage of Obamacare by the US House of Representatives, my interest in the obese and the overweight was marginal, I cared – but in the way you care about a plantar wart. I was already paying higher premiums, and it was annoying. But all that has changed now and your girth related health problems can no longer be ignored.

PS: You can plan on paying me for the portion of my airplane seat that you’ve gobbled up, as well. Bring cash. Hold the mustard.

….as if the health of the our nation was easy to ignore a few days ago? Obesity is an epidemic worth taking a look at, now that you have a stake? Too bad legislation cant cure apathy and callous behavior….

    Big Fattie Fat Fat

    Comrade Obama

Let's insure this woman on the backs of the proletariat.

Donna Simpson, world’s fattest mother, who gave birth to a socially doomed child in 2007 at a whopping 530 pounds, has decided to become the world’s fattest woman, with the lofty goal of 1000 pounds. In order to achieve this goal she has decided to completely cease her already morbidly limited level of physical activity and continue to imbibe more than 12,000 calories a day. This costs her more than $800 a week, and her 150 pound boyfriend, who apparently loves “bellies,” is happily supplementing her income to see her gain as much weight as possible.

As I read this article I noticed my fists clenching. I hate this woman.

I hope she chokes to death on a chicken bone.

And I hope her “belly man” is smothered in his sleep by her sixth chin.

It should disqualify a person for all federal aid and insurance to aspire to half-tonne whaledom. And the aiding and abetting of such a porcine disgrace should get the belly-man locked away for assisting a suicide. This is not pursuit of happiness, it’s pursuit of attention and it’s morally wrong.

Does this really have anything to do with Obama?

Not really, but the caption makes a valid point.

OPEC: Oil underweight, needs to fatten up.

As TSJ enthusiasts are well aware, Obesity is a major problem in the United States and abroad. While many fat folks choose to hold off dieting until the new year, oil has been losing weight for some time. Luckily, concerned by crude oil’s anorexic state, OPEC has intervened on its behalf.

“It’s less than meets the eye,” says Lawrence Eagles, JPMorgan Chase & Co’s global head of commodities research. Previous attempts by OPEC to curtail crude’s dwindling fatness, have have had virtually no effect and this latest move by oil producers may be similarly ineffective.

Experts say crude oil’s underweight issues may continue to influence its close friend, gasoline.

“When this baby hits rock bottom, she’s going to breakdown all over the Gasolines,”  remarked one commentator, “I’m talkin’ French model, skin n’ bones, $1.00/gallon gasoline here!”

Energy prices continue to set new records.

The only records energy prices are setting these days is a record for most detached commodities sector of the millenium. Well, that and biggest, fastest price drop ever.

And for what it’s worth, January gasoline (RBOB) contracts on the merc settled at something like $1.0035/gal today, so there’s your one-dollar gas. ‘Course that’s blendstock, but still.

      it’s $1.0055, I confused it with yesterday’s 1.035

Fat People Eat More – New research on weight and behavior.

    Somebody likes Chinese Buffets!

    Somebody likes Chinese buffets!

Buffet Behavior: The Science of Pigging Out »LiveScience

In the ongoing saga of fat people versus healthy people, a groundbreaking new study from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab has exposed the big fat truth about obesity. Fatties who cling to the notion of an obese gene will likely be forced to find new arguments to counter such scientifically-backed accusations as:

    • “You are fat because you take a bigger plate at the buffet
    • “You are overweight because you chew less and thereby eat more in less time.”
    • “You are an obese cow because you don’t care what you eat, you just start shoveling crap into your gaping maw.”
    • “Your pants don’t fit because of your fat ass.”

Fat people, overeating is a function of behavior, and yes, you can control that. Stop pigging out and make some lifestyle adjustments that truly help you and your fellow citizens (especially if you live in Canada), not to mention lighten the load on the US health care system.

and how, pray tell, will the svelte respond to accusations of overt hostility?

    • The Bruce 6:50 pm on December 3, 2008 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Hard to say. Probably by drowning their sorrows in mountains of food?

It would be nice if some of the fatties out there would man-up and respond right here at TSJ.

It’s true that it’s a genetic disease that makes these people fat. They seem to be, alas, born without the power of will to put down the fork and pick up the dumbbells or the running shoes. Is this any different than a genetic defect which makes your body store more fat?

P.S. It just so happens that I’m writing this comment with a huge bowl of cookie dough (my breakfast) in front of me haha…
