Nobel Prizes, Pointless Backslapping?

In recent years the Noble Prize selection committee has come under fire for questionable decisions, especially in the area of literature, accused of giving prizes to obscure or minor writers on the basis of political or social message their works convey, or sometimes to former members of the committee itself! Often great writers have been left completely out of the selection, never to be bestowed this high literary honor. Marie Arana shares a vitriolic scolding of the Nobel Prize selection committee, suggesting that perhaps certain prizes should no longer be offered, as they have abandoned the spirit of the organization.
