What the heck is Americium?

Nuclear technology is the future of power generation on Earth. As much as poorly informed politicians and head-in-the-clouds environmentalists would like you to believe, solar, wind, bioenergy will be minor players in the coming decades. These sources of power are not only horribly inefficient, but often release highly toxic chemicals into the environment that in fact do more damage than coal or oil power plants.

The main concern with nuclear power is of course, weapons proliferation. There have always been ways to prevent the dissemination of weapons-grade material that is a natural byproduct of nuclear power, but now scientists suggest that a special synthetic element called Americium, when added in correct proportions to the uranium fuel of domestic power plants, would effectively denature weapons grade plutonium and make it unusable in missiles or bombs.
