An English Major’s Perspective on the War

War is one subject that many people claim to know an awful lot about from very far away. We see “Saving Private Ryan” or a couple episodes of “Band of Brothers,” and we think we know something that only a small handful of Americans can truly understand. Writers and film makers can create story after story illustrating this or that point, paint this or that portrait of a war torn country or a beleaguered soldier, and they can do a masterful job, but literature and art are not pain and death and fear, no matter how well they describe or depict pain and death and fear.

Spc. Nathan Stopps describes his experiences in Iraq frankly and honestly for the Associated Press.
